For the Rights of Women & Children

Weekly Report 2

This is a picture of a great woman. Her name is Shirin Ebadi, the first Muslim woman to ever win a Nobel Peace Prize.

Ebadi was born in Hamadan, Iran and later moved to Tehran, Iran when she was only one. Tehran is also the place where she became the first women in Iran to become a judge and the first woman in Iran's history to be appointed Chief Justice.

After the Islamic Revolution she them lost her title - like many women in the field- and became a clerk in the courts. Not liking her position she left and tried to get her license to practice law which she was approved of in 1992. Upon waiting for her license she taught many classes in human rights and after getting her license she took on many cases to put her civil rights knowledge to use, such as cases in child abuse and cases focusing on women.

According to nobelprize.org and biography.com, Ebdadi was cofounder of Association for Support of Children's Rights and Human Rights Defense Center. According to nobelwomensinitiative.org, she also established the Million Signatures Campaign to stop discrimination against women

In 2003 Shirin Ebadi won the Noble Peace Prize.
